Elsie McRibbon, 72, started knitting a jumper for her granddaughter’s birthday. However, she lost the pattern instructions and didn’t know how to finish the project so she just kept knitting.

“I guess I got a little carried away,” said Elsie from Hampstead. “I got so engrossed I just kept going and going.

“I rang my daughter to ask her to get me more wool and she asked if I was knitting for an army.

“I didn’t realise the jumper was so long until she called round with more wool. It was trailing through the kitchen and up the stairs, and the cats had made a bed in it. Oh my.”

Elsie quickly became a social media star after her granddaughter Stephanie, 17, videoed herself with the jumper trailing along the street. She called the video “My Gran made this for me” and it attracted 1.2m views on YouTube.

Stephanie started a YouTube channel called “Knitting with my Gran” and it already has half a million subscribers.

Elsie got in touch with the Guinness Book of Records. They said their “longest jumper” record was 8.95m set in 1991 by Mike Powell and asked if she could beat that.

Elsie said she’d have a go but was a bit shaky on her feet after sitting knitting for so long.

When asked what she was going to do with the jumper Elsie replied: “I’ll probably pull it out and knit tea cosies. Do people still use tea pots?”

The wool for the jumper has so far cost £327.
