Software that analyses the proportion of male-to-female dialogue in movies has revealed that movies with more male characters contain proportionally more male dialogue.
This revelation has sent shockwaves through Hollywood and the TV industry. Both male and females scriptwriters have vowed to include more female characters in their scripts and to give them more dialogue whether or not it contributes to the plot.
A prominent actor agent who did not want to be identifies pointed to a sociological study of real life male-female dialogue which showed that, on average, women talk 80% more than men. In that case the representation of gender dialogue in movies only readdresses the balance.
Actor’s agents specialising in child actors vehemently agreed with the report. The amount of dialogue given to children in movies was less than 1%. That includes movies such as ET, The Goonies and Home Alone. It seems that movies which do not include children struggle to include child dialogue.
. The Association of Screenwriters and Scriptwriters vowed to include more child dialogue and baby noises in their scripts whether or not the script featured children or babies.
An agent representing animals in movies said there was definitely an unequal amount of dialogue – or woofs, meows, grunts or whatever – in movies featuring animals.
“Animals get a really raw deal,” he said. “Animal dialogue is minimal and unrealistic and they get paid peanuts. A cat or a dog might be in 50% of a domestic scene but get no lines at all. And don’t get me started on goldfish.”
However, even though women may speak less, their presence in movies is growing with women occupying more than 60% of visual screen time.
Critics blamed the predominance of male film editors. Editors who included an excessive amount of baby time have since been sacked.
A spokesman for the Movie Association of Legendary Entertainers said it is up to the movie studios to produce movies with more female dialogue if that’s what they want, but asked if we don’t get enough of it in real life?
In a movie do you want quantity or quality?
Do you really care, as long as there are lots of tits?
